Friends of Jesmond Dene

About Us

Jesmond Dene is a wonderful, historic park in the heart of suburban Newcastle. The Dene is formed from the Ouseburn’s steep-sided, wooded valley which is a peaceful haven for residents, visitors and wildlife alike.

The Friends of Jesmond Dene is a volunteer-run charity pledged to improve, preserve and promote the environment in and around Jesmond Dene for the benefit of residents, wildlife and visitors. The writer and broadcaster John Grundy is Patron of the Friends of Jesmond Dene.

What we do

Whilst we are not responsible for the Dene’s or its historic buildings’ maintenance, we exist to encourage public interest in everything concerning the Dene:

conservation and encouragement of wildlife;
planting trees and shrubs; and
sharing the local history of the famous families who have lived in or close to Jesmond Dene.

We work closely with volunteer and employed Rangers, who look after the Dene’s maintenance and undertake special projects to improve the Dene; and with other experts and specialists who run events.

Please join us at our annual AGM to find out more. It’s at 2pm on the 12th May in the Visitor Centre, Red Walk, Jesmond Dene, NE7 7BQ.

More About Joining the Friends

Friends receive twice-yearly newsletters covering matters of local interest and giving full details of the talks and other activities arranged for members. For those now living away from Tyneside we try to keep them in touch with efforts to preserve the Dene in good shape until they can come back in person to visit it once again.

Membership fees are kept low and help to support our work in preserving the Dene’s integrity. They are currently £5 per year, per household, paid through annual standing order.

Friends can help to support events and/or the Friends’ Committee. Volunteering like this is vital to keeping our Committee fresh and the events viable and safe. You can suggest ideas for the Committee to discuss at our next meeting by emailing us at Friends.of.jesmond.dene@gmail.com.

These contributions are key to helping us make the most of external experts’ time and skills at events.

To join the Friends, simply email us at Friends.of.jesmond.dene@gmail.com and we will respond to you with the next steps.
