Jesmond Dene is a wonderful, historic park in the heart of suburban Newcastle. The Dene is formed from the Ouseburn’s steep-sided, wooded valley which is a peaceful haven for residents, visitors and wildlife alike.

The Friends of Jesmond Dene is a volunteer-run charity pledged to improve, preserve and promote the environment in and around Jesmond Dene for the benefit of residents, wildlife and visitors. The writer and broadcaster John Grundy is Patron of the Friends of Jesmond Dene.

What we do

Whilst we are not responsible for the Dene’s or its historic buildings’ maintenance, we exist to encourage public interest in everything concerning the Dene:

  • conservation and encouragement of wildlife;
  • planting trees and shrubs; and
  • sharing the local history of the famous families who have lived in or close to Jesmond Dene.

We work closely with volunteer and employed Rangers, who look after the Dene’s maintenance and undertake special projects to improve the Dene; and with other experts and specialists who run events.
